During this week of Thanksgiving, I think of untold numbers of children and adults being cared for who ultimately return the gift of caregiving in their own ways…selflessly, with grace and joy, in a healing capacity, through presence of expressions without words, and in creating moments that will be forever remembered and treasured. One example is Zach. You may well be acquainted with him already; I can read his story and listen to his music over and over and always feel lifted up above my own world.

Zach suffered from terminal bone cancer. His ability to write music and leave it as one of his legacies touches me each time I hear this song. A way of dealing with his own transition from this life, he gave beauty to the millions who have listened to the words and the music. I find myself singing the refrain over and over and it always makes me smile, though there is clearly sadness and a very real sense of missing.

This song has been sung by as many as 5,000 people in his memory and honor at the Mall of America in the Twin Cities.

Let yourself sink into the feeling and watch his smile. He cared for others magnificently in his final months and celebrated with as much joy as possible until his last moments.

One boy.

One song.

A celebration of life.

He gave and received in equal measure.

Lyrics

I fell down, down, down
Into this dark and lonely hole
There was no one there to care about me anymore
And I needed a way to climb and grab a hold of the edge
You were sitting there holding a rope

And we’ll go up, up, up
But I’ll fly a little higher
Go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer
Up here my dear
It won’t be long now, it won’t be long now

When we get back on land
Well I’ll never get my chance
Be ready to live and it’ll be ripped right out of my hands
And maybe someday we’ll take a little ride
Go up, up, up and everything will be just fine

And we’ll go up, up, up
But I’ll fly a little higher
Go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer
Up here my dear

t won’t be long now, it won’t be long now
If only I had a little bit more time
If only I had a little bit more time with you

It could go up, up, up
Then take that little ride
We’ll sit there holding hands
And everything would be just right
And maybe someday I’ll see you again
We’ll float up in the clouds and we’ll never see the end

We’ll go up, up, up
But I’ll fly a little higher
Go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer
Up here my dear
It won’t be long now, it won’t be long now
